John Harold Haynes published his first book in 1956, when he was still at school. It was about building a 'special' based on the Austin 7. He wrote two more books while carrying out National Service in the RAF, and founded J. H. Haynes & Co. Ltd. in 1960; the Haynes Austin Healey Sprite Owner's Workshop Manual was published five years later.
Haynes was awarded the OBE in 1995 for services to publishing. He died in 2019, aged 79.
